(SISS) Hi Kat where are you from and where are you currently spending your time? (Kat) I was born and raised on the beautiful island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Currently I live in Washington D.C. which is where I have decided to practice law. (SISS) What was one of the hardest things that you had to go through? What advice would you give someone going through the same struggle? (Kat) Moving to the United States on my own at age 18 was definitely the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I left my entire family back home on St. Croix to attend college and eventually to attend law school. My advice to someone going through the same struggle is to build friendships with quality people at your new location, because it does get lonely and having supportive and quality people around you will help ease the process. (SISS) Congratulations on your Law degree #SISS Tell us more, who is @SimplyKat_Vi and what are you most proud of? (Kat) I am “simply” just a woman from a small island with big dreams, ambition and goals who represents where I came from (VI is short for Virgin Islands) any chance that I get. I am most proud of my resilience, my journey to getting my law degree was not the least bit easy. There were nights that I would call my parents and cry, telling them that I want to drop out and give up…but I didn’t… no matter what happened…I didn’t give up. (SISS) One year from now what do you hope to have accomplished (business or personal)? (Kat) In a year from now, I hope to have passed the bar exam and have my license to practice law. I also hope to have my domestic violence and sexual assault organization up and running. (SISS) How dedicated are you to fitness? What is your fitness goal? On your body, what is your favorite body part and what is your least favorite? (Kat) Coming from the Caribbean I was so used to healthy eating, as soon as I moved to the United States, fast food became my best friend! Lol. Since the beginning of 2018, I have cut out fast food and began meal prepping weekly in hopes that I can get back to the completely healthy lifestyle I had back in the islands. My favorite body part would probably be my curves because society has tried to force women into thinking that a small size 0 frame is the definition of beauty and I don’t agree. I truly love every aspect of my body, flaws and all so without sounding conceited it’s fair to say that I don’t really have a least favorite body part. (SISS) What makes you the happiest? What is fun for you? (Kat) What makes me the happiest is being able to help girls and other women with the struggles that come with life. I have chosen to practice family law, which is a field of law that is not fun for most lawyers but fun for me because with every case my goal is to rehabilitate broken families and the joy that comes from doing that is indescribable. (SISS) How do you deal with disappointment? How do you Keep Going? (Kat) I deal with disappointment by first, praying over the situation and secondly, turning on some music to lighten my mood and then finally, trying to rectify the matter with a now clear mind. My parents have helped so much with motivating me when things got rough, I don’t think I would have kept going if I did not have them in my corner and on speed dial! Lol. (SISS) What is your superpower? (Kat) My superpower would have to be my ability to give love without conditions placed on it. We live in a society where having feelings or loving others is not applauded nor appreciated so I believe that my ability to do so is definitely a super power. (SISS) What is your weakness and what do you do to overcome it? (Kat) My weakness is probably the fact that I am way too selfless at times, I am learning now how to be selfish without taking it too far. Sometimes you have to truly put yourself first. (SISS) Can you tell us four things people don’t know about you? (Kat) I write music, sing and play multiple instruments. I know how to skim board and surf. I listen to every single genre of music there is… yes, including country music. I am part Syrian. (SISS) Can you tell us where else can our readers follow your daily inspiration? (Kat) I am actually starting a podcast/youtube channel in July of 2018 with my cousin where we will cover controversial issues and topics. You can follow me on Instagram @simplykat_vi to find the link to it. (SISS) What’s your favorite quote? (Kat) “A woman is like a tea bag - you can't tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.” - Eleanor Roosevelt (SISS) At Smart is so sexy we love to see women who are thriving in their career or business. What are you most passionate about? (Kat) Like I have mentioned my career is a lawyer but my passion is children, women and families, hence why I am a family law attorney. (SISS) Who was the most influential person in your life and why? (Kat) My mother is the most influential person in my life, she has overcome so many obstacles in her life like obtaining her U.S. citizenship at a time where immigrants were being chastised and ostracized to overcoming the loss of her first child and still standing strong. She has taught me strength and perseverance. (SISS) Where were you five years ago? What advice would you tell your five years younger self? (Kat) Five years ago, I was a 20 year-old young woman who thought she knew it all and had it all figured out. Five years ago I was in college and engaged to be married and I thought I had life all figured out but I had no idea how much harder life was going to get. If I had to tell my five year’s younger self anything it would be to pace yourself and to take your time with love and with life. (SISS) Can you take us through a typical day? From Waking up to going to bed, Can you give us a play by play of a typical day for you? (Kat) A typical day begins with me waking up, taking care of all hygienic matters, blasting some music while I get dressed, probably eating breakfast in the car while on my way to work at the courthouse, morning court docket are mostly motion calendars and then the afternoon filled with hearings, once I get home from work I have dinner and get my studying on! Quite boring ! lol (SISS) What is your favorite meal? What is your favorite book and/or the latest one you’ve read? What is your favorite song? (Kat) My favorite meal would have to be boiled fish and fungi which is a local dish in the Virgin Islands. Doesn’t sound appetizing to most non- Virgin Islanders but trust me it is amazing! My favorite book is hands down the Bible. My favorite song is Young and Beautiful by Lana Del Rey! It will definitely be my wedding song one day! (SISS) When do you feel the sexiest? (Kat) I feel the sexiest when I am acknowledged for BOTH my looks AND my intellect. (SISS) Is there someone on social media that inspires you and is a great follow? (Kat) I love following Angela Rye because she is not only also an attorney but a black female attorney at that. Plus she keeps it 100! (SISS) Thank you so much Kat, for sharing with us. Please follow her on Instagram @SimplyKat_Vi you will not regret it. She is the definition of Smart is so Sexy!
